Although I have strongly mixed feelings about this version of P&P (for instance, Matthew Macfayden’s character is very, very appealing, but what has he done with Mr. Darcy?), the casting of Mr. Wickham is one of the elements I very much liked. In all other filmed versions of P&P ever ever ever, the actor cast to play Wickham is physically less attractive than the guy who plays Mr. Darcy. This is nuts, because the book makes it clear that Darcy, while not unattractive, is someone whose charm definitely has to grow on you — while Wickham is supposed to be hot stuff. 

Hello, hot stuff. I mean, Matthew Macfayden’s delightful, but … wow. 

I really like that this version gave the audience credit for intelligence enough to see past a more handsome Wickham’s facade, and to fall for a more unconventionally attractive Darcy.
